Raising the Putz

Each year on a Saturday afternoon in November, members of Edgeboro gathered to prepare the traditional Putz — a display sharing the story of Jesus’ birth in sights and sounds. This time lapse shows about about three and half hours of work rolling newspaper, wetting it, placing it on the display, and then covering it with live moss. Figurines, settings, and lights put the finishing touches on the putz.

History

For over 35 years, Edgeboro Moravian Church has been celebrating the long-standing Moravian tradition of displaying a putz. A putz is more than just a nativity scene. It’s a display made up of multiple scenes. With narration, it tells the story of the first Christmas through today. We have narration appropriate for all ages! (“Tiny Tots,” Youth, Adult)

Meaning of “Putz”

The word “Putz” is taken from the German word “putzen”, meaning to arrange a decoration. Moravians use this name for Christmas scenes they make in their homes. Early Moravians would prepare these displays and then go “putzing” to view fellow Moravian displays.

Volunteers

Our Putz is run completely by volunteers throughout the season. Many thanks to all who make this possible during the Christmas season!
